Bike - FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

This is an evolving FAQ about bike/biking primarily associated with triathlon.  If you discover any inaccuracies or you have a question that is not answered here or on the site,  please use the ‘add comment’ at the bottom of this post.

We believe the information to be accurate, but do not guarantee its accuracy and assume no responsibility for any consequences as a result of it.

Many thanks to the Bridgewater Triathlon Club (BTC) for letting us post on their website.  We hope that triathletes find the information useful.  However, the information and  listed rides are not in any way associated with the BTC.

HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON?

There are several ways to find out about rides and bike info:

  1. Rides for the upcoming week will be posted on the Home Page of the Bridgewater Triathlon site here
  2. The upcoming rides as well as an archive of previous rides, a bike FAQ and anything else ‘bike’ related will be here
  3. Upcoming rides will be posted on the BTC email list.
  4. Ride info is also posted on a Google Calendar
  5. I also have a send only email update.  If you would like to be added, send an email to tom.rogers57@gmail.com

WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR BICYCLISTS IN NOVA SCOTIA?

from Bicycle Nova Scotia : http://www.bicycle.ns.ca

  • Wear a helmet every time you ride.
  • Stop before you ride onto the road.
  • Bicycles are vehicles, just like cars:
    • Always ride on the right side of the road.
    • Stop at stop signs (foot down).
    • Obey traffic lights.
    • Before you turn, do a shoulder check, then signal with your arm.
    • Yield to right-of-way traffic and to pedestrians.
    • Use front and rear lights when riding in the dark.
  • Ride predictably - don’t weave in and out between parked cars.
  • Don’t ride too close to parked cars - their doors could be opened suddenly.
  • Don’t carry bags on your handlebars, it makes the bicycle unstable.
  • Only children are allowed to cycle on the sidewalk.
  • Children under the age of ten generally do not have the necessary skills to cycle safely in traffic by themselves.

RIDES?

The Sunday Ride is an easy paced, open for all ride that starts from various locations around Lunenburg County and typically covers 40-50kms over 2-2.5 hours.  We typically have a ‘break’ somewhere along the ride for a coffee/beverage/nature call.  We ride whenever the roads permit (even thru the winter).  Upcoming rides are posted on the Bridgewater Triathlon Club website or by a separate email list (contact tom.rogers57@gmail.com about the list)

During the summer (June-August), we conduct a 10K time trial (TT) on Second Peninsula just outside Lunenburg.  Warm-ups start around 6pm and the timing begins at 6:30pm.  This is an excellent way to benchmark your fitness level.  Also, many triathletes benefit because the TT simulates the ride portion of a triathlon.  Upcoming rides are posted on the Bridgewater Triathlon Club website or by email..

BTC Wednesday Night Practises throughout the summer often include a ride component.  The main objective with these rides is to practise a brick  (ie: first you bike, then you run  or first you swim, then you bike).  This is an extremely important part of triathlons and the club practises provide an ideal opportunity to hone the skill.  The Wednesday nite practises are posted on the club website.  To participate in the BTC workouts, you must be a member (join Triathlon Nova Scotia = member of BTC)

Other rides?  individuals do there own thing — longer rides, mountain bike, etc.  You just have to find out who does it and make private arrangements.
