2010 Kids of Steel – July 1st

The eighth annual South Shore Kids of Steel triathlon is scheduled for July 1 in and around the Bridgewater outdoor pool.

Part of a national program designed to encourage healthy, active living in children ages three to 15, it includes swimming, biking and running segments with an emphasis on fun, non-competitive participation over short distances appropriate for each age group.

2010 South Shore Kids of Steel – July 1st

For 2010, the Bridgewater Triathlon Club will be taking a more active role in the South Shore Kids of Steel.  It will be the same, great event kids and parents have participated in for the last 7 years with a few tweaks:

  • Steve Saunders and Bev Richardson step up as Race Director (many thanks to Karen Selig for her RD role over the years)
  • the event has a webpage at : http://www.bridgewatertriclub.com/kos/
  • BTC member Cliff Worden-Rogers will be at some local schools in early June getting elementary kids involved in multi-sport
  • there will be an orientation session for kids and parents on Thu Jun 10th (for ages 10 and under) and Thu Jun 17th (for ages 10 and up) where you can get your bike checked, asked questions and get an introduction to how the KOS event will take place.  (contact the Bridgewater Rec Dept for more info at 543-2274)

There will be lots of great prizes — including a new bike courtesy of the Lunenburg Bike Barn.  Its a fantastic way to kick-off Canada Day!

South Shore Kids of Steel outstanding success!

South Shore Kids of Steel

BTC member and co-event organizer Steve Saunders writes …

By all accounts the event went very smoothly and safely.  We had many thank yous from the parents and the athletes.  The police remarked how smoothly the event went.  This year our members took care of both the bike and run course.  Even the swim course was managed by a BTC member. Volunteers remained dedicated to their posts to the end. For this we owe you our thanks.

The worst thing that happened seemed to be a scraped knee of one young athlete.

Even the rain held off until the last young athlete crossed the finish line.

Many thanks to our club members who have volunteered to help.   Also, many thanks to all our sponsors for their support.  I’d like to extend a special thank you to the Bridgewater Triathlon Club (donation, bike stands, transportation, volunteers) and the Bluenose Striders Running Club (walkie-talkies, extra bibs, volunteers).

Great job everyone!
