BTC starts a new season

The following article is in the current issue of our local newspaper, the Lighthouse Bulletin/Progress.  We are very fortunate to have an excellent community newspaper that supports local groups

[BRIDGEWATER] – The Bridgewater Triathlon Club’s 2010 season is off and running.

Swimmers may take part in two practices, one a coached session to prepare for the upcoming race season, the other more unstructured and relaxed.

Cyclists are getting ready for warmer days with a weekly spin workout at the HB Studios Sports Centre. Using bikes on trainers, the program is designed to build good biking skills while increasing fitness.

During January, club member Tammy Slauenwhite is conducting a weekly session on strength training and stretching routines after the spin workouts.

Triathlon race season

race-riverport

[BRIDGEWATER, NS] – July 14, 2009 — Summertime in Nova Scotia — beach time, BBQs and race season for the Bridgewater Triathlon Club.  Members are not required to race, but most do. It’s a good opportunity to see how your training is coming along and travel to some new spots to see old friends and make new ones.  There are over a dozen races to choose from across Nova Scotia.  If you are willing to travel, there are many, many more outside the province.

Triathlon races often have several formats within one race.  For new-comers, a popular first race is called a ‘Try-a-tri’.  The idea is to introduce people to multi-sport races with swim, bike and run elements that are achievable with a modest amount of preparation.  The most popular format is the ‘Sprint’ that include a 750M swim, 20k bike and a 5k run.  The ‘Olympic’ distance is –  as the name suggests — the format used in the Olympic Games with a 1500M swim, 40K bike and a 10K run.  Many ‘Sprint’ distance racers graduate to the Olympic distance for the additional challenge.  The Bridgetown Triathlon on August 2 includes the popular formats and is a club favourite.

Three of our club members are preparing for the IronMan distance. This grueling event includes a 3.8K swim, 180k bike and a 42k run. Preparation is key for IronMan and it includes many, many hours in the water, on the bike and pounding the pavement.

New this year — the club has two awards to encourage and recognize members that race.  The Point Series Award goes to the top male and top female in their best three triathlons/duathlons.  The Warrior Award goes to the person who completes the most races.  As it turns out, running races are the most popular event with our members.  The current leaders are listed on our website.

Triathlon Club welcomes newcomers

[BRIDGEWATER, NS] – June 8, 2009 — The Bridgewater Triathlon Club’s summertime practice at the Fancy Lake Picnic Park is underway on Thursday nights.  Returning triathletes use it as part of their weekly conditioning program.  For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to check out multi-sports like triathlon (swim-bike-run) and duathlon (run-bike-run) in a safe and supportive environment.  Anyone interested in multi-sport is welcome to come out to watch or participate.

The provincial multi-sport race season has just started.  Tammy Slauenwhite was the sole club member to participate in the Lawrencetown Duathlon.  The first triathlon in the race series will be held at Shearwater with 14 club members signed up.  The bike portion of the Shearwater race is on the runway!

Parents — South Shore Kids of Steel takes place on July 1st from the DesBrisay Museum/Outdoor Pool.  It is a great way to introduce children to an active lifestyle.  Many of our club members assist the Bridgewater Parks and Rec (543-2274 to register) with this very popular and enjoyable event

Once again this year, we’d like to thank the driver’s along the Conquerall Mills Road for their attention and patience on Thursday nights between 6:30 and 8:00pm.  The road can get busy with cyclists, runners and vehicles.
